Onesumore: Black Samurai Anime ‘Yasuke’ Season 1 Coming to Netflix in April 2021
Another exciting anime arrives in 2021. LeSean Thomas’ latest project, Yasuke, the tale of Japan’s only Black Samurai, arrives in April. We’re keeping track of everything you need to know about Yasuke Season 1, including the plot, new trailers, cast news, and Netflix release date.
Yasuke is an upcoming Netflix Original animated series based on the legendary figure of the same name, known as the only black samurai in Japanese history. Creator, director and executive producer LeSean Thomas has said how excited he is to be working on the series:
There is a fortuitous nature about this project, how an African American man travels to Japan to live and work among the best of Japanese anime to create an anime about an African who travels to Japan to live among the Japanese elite and become a warrior. . A part of me deep inside feels like I had to create this series of adventures with MAPPA, Flying Lotus, LaKeith and the rest of this talented team.
Yasuke is a fascinating and mysterious figure in Japanese history who has garnered increasing interest in today’s media over the decades. I first learned about Yasuke’s role in Japanese history for about ten years. The children’s book, Kuro-suke by Kurusu Yoshio, featured images that piqued my curiosity. Finally learning that he was not just a fictional character, but a real person, was exciting material for an adventure story.
I’m so excited that longtime fans and newcomers alike are enjoying our reimagined version of this historic figure.
LeSean’s most recent project on Netflix was the animated series Cannon Busters. Over the years, LeSean has worked on many popular anime projects:
- Batman: the brave and the daring
- Black dynamite
- The Boondocks
- The Legend of Korra
- Spider Man
MAPPA animation studio is working on the project, the legendary production which is animated for other incredible anime such as Kakegurui, Attack on Titan: The Final Season, and Jujutsu kaisen.

Who was the real one Yasuke?
According to historical records, Yasuke was the only known black samurai from feudal times in Japan. He has also been recognized as the only known non-Japanese servant to serve Daimyō Oda Nobunaga.
Its origin is widely debated, but Yasuke first came to Japan under the service of Italian Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano. Upon meeting Oda Nobunaga, the daimyō was fascinated by Yasuke’s skin and was convinced that it was covered with black ink.
Yasuke would eventually enter the service of Oda Nobunaga and accompany him in his conquest to unify Japan. His service at Nobunaga ended after the Honnō-ji incident, which resulted in Nobunaga’s death. The warrior had been present at the battle and had tried in vain to stop the attackers.
He would immediately join the service of Oda Nobunaga’s son, Oda Nobutada. Yasuke was quickly captured while fighting for Nobutada’s forces and was introduced to Akechi, the man responsible for Nobunaga’s death.
According to historical records, Yasuke was donated to the Christian Church in Kyoto, but historians often doubt his credibility. After his capture, no other record or writing of Yasuke exists.
