Black summer is a Netflix Original zombie thriller series created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams. Set in the same Z-Nation universe, the series is billed as a prequel to the beloved Mad Zombie series, but it’s more of a spiritual successor than anything else. Taking a more nuanced tone, with an intimate and darker tone compared to that of its companion series.
Years before the events of Nation Z, during the darkest days of the zombie apocalypse, a mother joins a group of strangers to help find her lost daughter and their loved ones. While it has spiritual ties to Z-Nation, it actually takes place on a very different timeline from the Syfy series which remains canceled to this day.

The pandemic took hold and the show was on permanent hiatus. Now, in July 2020, a new ProductionWeekly report said the series is scheduled to restart filming on August 17, 2020.

What to expect from Black Summer season 2
* SPOILERS BELOW *
Opinions can be divided on whether Black summer needs a second season. The final shot was Rose and her daughter about to reunite, giving us one of the few happy moments in season one.
Out of the group of survivors, only Sun, Spears, and Rose survived the trip to the stadium. Rose’s story is effectively concluded after reuniting with her daughter. Spears’ only motives were to survive and help Rose on her journey. Meanwhile, Sun who does not speak a word of English may have been looking only to be evacuated.
The only survivor motivated to continue the story was Vallez, but Rose had to kill him out of pity, due to her and the other survivors slowing down from his injury. Additionally, Lance is AWOL as he fled from a growing horde of zombies.
Speaking of hordes, there was a lot of talk about the Tsunami in Season 1, but we’ve never seen it. If Black Summer returns for a second season, the zombie tidal wave can’t be overly aware, but given how useless the protagonists are in killing zombies, the game will be over when it arrives.
There is room for more Black summer, especially if the plans are for the show to bond with Z-Nation. We’d love to see Black Summer’s story, in fact, go into the details of the event mentioned on Z-Nation.
Mass starvation, paranoia and panic have made this summer one of the most difficult times of the apocalypse, which should be explored in more detail.
In an exclusive interview with Alec Puro, the series’ composer, he dropped a few clues about what we can musically expect from the second season by saying:
“Season 2 of Black summer has a whole new set of themes that reflect the new environment and new characters of the show. I also build on the previous themes from Season 1, but the sound of the series has definitely evolved and is even more refined and focused in this new season.
When will Black Summer season 2 be on Netflix?
No official date has been set yet, although we hear that the current plan is to release the series in the summer of 2021. How much of this is true remains to be seen.
