Cobra Kai Season 4 is filming, and if you’re looking for the latest news on the upcoming fourth season, including when it might be released, where it’s in production, and what we can expect, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s everything we know so far Cobra Kai season 4.

From its humble beginnings on YouTube Premium, Cobra Kai is now one of the biggest titles in the Netflix Original lineup. After decades after the Karate Kid films, the series picks up again with Johnny and Daniel years later, the two debuting competing with dojos that spark old rivalries.

Cobra Kai Season 4 Netflix Renewal Status

Official renewal status: Renewed from October 2020

Season 4 was renewed long before Season 3 hit our screens, but it’s worth revisiting the timeline of Netflix’s acquisition of the series before we look to the future.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Cobra Kai posted on YouTube Premium and Season 3 was originally commissioned by YouTube Premium. However, as part of a change in strategy for the platform, it wasn’t going to release the third season (or was and would be the end), so the series went live in early 2020.

Netflix went on to win it and seasons 1 and 2 hit Netflix this summer. Season 3, which had already completed filming long before Seasons 1 and 2 reached Netflix, would then be released at a later date which would ultimately become January 1, 2021.

This was around the time that Seasons 1 and 2 of the series officially lit up once Netflix knew it was worth the investment and the show was popular enough to continue.

Where is Cobra Kai season 4 in production?

Production status: Shooting on February 26

As we saw above, writing for Season 4 technically began before the show was fully picked up by Netflix, as they awaited news based on the performance of the addition of Seasons 1 and 2. to Netflix over the summer.

By the end of October 2020, the writing team had finished after 14 weeks of writing. From there, more tweak scripts took place in preparation for filming.

As for the start of filming, we always thought it was in early 2021, as we reported back in September. Now, thanks to a production list, we have an estimated lead time as to the production time.

As stated, the filming was to take place from January 20, 2021 and until April 15, 2021.

It’s unclear when filming actually started, but the first script might suggest that it didn’t start until a month later, on February 26, 2021. In an interview with Ralph Macchio with the NYTimes, he suggested that Netflix does not allow cast and crew to notify us of filming updates.

Episode 1 of Season 4 is titled “Let’s Begin” and is written by Josh Heald, John Hurwitz and Hayden Schl0ssberg.

Since the start of filming we’ve had a few updates from the cast and the progress crew.

On March 26, Jon Hurwitz posted that they shot several scenes that would vary wildly saying some will make you cry and some will make you laugh.

Who will play in season 4 of Cobra Kai?

While it’s a bit too early to go through all of the cast for Season 4, we can expect the majority of the main cast to remain.

The new guest star from previous films returning for the series is Thomas Ian Griffith who plays Terry Silver.

As for other guest stars from the old movies, it also depends on speculation at the moment.

Hillary Swank in The Next Karate Kid

One of the key names that have yet to return is Hillary Swank as Julie Pierce. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Hurwitz discussed the possibility of saying:

“In our writers’ room we’re talking about literally all of the characters that have appeared in the Miyagi verse, so it’s obvious we’ve been talking about Julie Pierce. As to whether or not she will return in the series, you’ll just have to wait to find out. “

As to whether Elisabeth Shue will return, that also seems to be on hold. Her character, Ali, is likely coming home to be with her two children, as she was only there for the holidays. But never say never, especially since she’s now divorced and the time they shared before the call.

The first major announcements of new players came at the end of February when it was revealed, two new faces appeared in Cobra Kai season 4.

Here’s what was announced:

  • Vanessa Rubio and Peyton List would be promoted to the rank of regulars in the series.
  • Dallas dupree young was cast as Kenny, “a new bullied kid in school who turns to karate for self-defense.”
  • Oona O’Brien will play Devon “a potential new karate student who is relentlessly competitive, quick study and just as hot-tempered when provoked.”

As to who will compete for each dojos, that’s another story. Samantha and Miguel are both main fighters in the combined dojos while Robby Keene, Tory and Kyler are all viable options for Cobra Kai.

One of the last scenes of Cobra Kai Season 3 sees Kreese calling his former war vet buddy for backup. For those who don’t know, he calls out Terry Silver who was played by Thomas Ian Griffith who appeared in The Karate Kid Part III. Money is remarkable because it founded Cobra Kai.

Since the start of production, Thomas Ian Griffith, who plays Terry Silver, has posted posts on social media, which could indicate what he will look like in one form or another throughout Season 4.

Elsewhere, you could expect to see the “beard-necked professor” Stingray return for Season 4. At the start of Season 3, it is mentioned that he was currently on probation but the actor behind the character has teased a comeback could be on the cards.

In other big changes, Hawk appears to be able to change his hair color from previous seasons (where he was red). The actor was recently seen signing signatures sporting a new purple haircut.

We might also see changes to the fight scenes in Cobra Kai season 4 too. In one interview with Bleeding Cool, Hiro Koda and Jahnel Curfman both say they are no longer involved in the project.

Will there be a Cobra Kai season 5 on Netflix?

Before you leave you might be wondering what the future will look like beyond season 4. At the moment it’s still pending but according to Cinemablend a roadmap has been fitted out.

Again, Hurwitz had this to say about the postseason 4 plan:

“We have plans beyond that. We haven’t had any firm discussions with Netflix about the end of the series, but we did express that if at their end there was a period of time where they were like, ‘That’s enough. Cobra Kai business ”, to give us a warning so that we can wrap things up appropriately. I think we’re going to have the right amount of lead to do this in a way that’s satisfying to the fans and leave the characters in a fulfilling place close to the story with potential for more stories later on. “
