What is the plot of Operation Mincemeat?

Operation Mincemeat was a military deception operation conducted by Allied forces during World War II. Its purpose was to disguise the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily as a mere sham, planting false documents and correspondence on a corpse and faking the corpse’s identity as a fictional army captain. The corpse with the documents was freed from a submarine near the coast of Spain to be discovered by Spain and the documents were shared with the Germans, leading them to believe that the main Allied target would be Greece . The operation proved successful as even Adolf Hitler was deceived by the plan and did not provide enough force to defend Sicily while Allied forces liberated it.

The operation was planned and carried out by Ewen Montagu (Colin Firth) and Charles Cholmondeley (Matthew MacFayden). It was however inspired by The Trout Memo of 1939, published as Admiral John Godfrey, British Director of Naval Intelligence, but written by Ian Fleming, who is best known for creating the iconic spy gentleman James Bond. The memo details 54 ways an enemy can be lured or trapped like a trout.

After the war, Ewen Montagu wrote a book about the whole operation titled The man who never was. The book was later adapted into a 1956 film of the same name. The Netflix adaptation, however, takes that of author and historian Ben Mcintyre. Operation Mincemeat book as the source material of the film.

Netflix Director Operation Mincemeat, John Madden commented:

“Set against the backdrop of WWII narratives, the story of Operation Mincemeat is unique – a bizarre and alluring blend of cinematic high-level espionage and ingenious fiction, where the stakes could hardly be higher. Michelle Ashford’s screenplay merges several currents and moods: tense, romantic, thrilling, surprisingly funny and infinitely surprising. It tells a richly human story of the soldiers we rarely see, fighting another kind of war in the shadows and deception, haunted by the knowledge that certainty and the guarantee of success are nowhere to be found.
