One of the new licensed films coming to Netflix (but currently only slated for release in the US) in April 2021 is Drew Barrymore’s new comedy film, The stand in.

After releasing on video on demand services in mid-December 2020, it will now be doing its SVOD (streaming video on demand) premieres on Netflix US on April 10, 2021.

Directed by Jamie Babbit and written by Sam Bain, the film will be a familiar concept to those who enjoyed it. Live with yourself or Princess Switch where Barrymore plays twice (essentially) with an actress engaged in rehabilitation and her booth takes her place.

Along with Barrymore in the film are Michael Zegen, TJ Miller, Holland Taylor, Teddy Coluca, Ellie Kemper, Charlie Barnett, Michelle Buteau and Andrew Rannells.

The film is one of many films that have been swept away in the chaos of COVID-19 and have therefore seen their entire distribution plan disrupted. The stand in Was at the origin scheduled to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival before being taken over by Saban Films last summer.

For those expecting an Oscar winning film, don’t get too excited. Reviews of the film are not particularly positive. On Metacritic, the title currently sits at 38. The title sits at 4.5 on IMDb with just over 1000 reviews.

Perhaps the nicest review we’ve seen has come from the LA Times which praises Drew Barrymore’s performance by saying that she “doesn’t disappoint.”

Drew Barrymore will be familiar to most Netflixers for a number of titles, including the tragically canceled comedy series Santa Clarita diet where she co-starred alongside Timothy Olyphant.
