In the Season 7 Premiere of Fear the walking dead, Strand leaned so hard in his rediscovered villainy that it was a miracle he didn’t fall over. (And holy crap, human charisma machine Colman Domingo played it to its limits; he enjoyed each smug line as much as his character made his trust.) It took a minute to to get but for Victor…
First, “The Beacon” introduced us to Will (Dickinson Vet Gus Halper), a sad twenty-something who looked almost ready to serve himself on a walker when he was stopped by Strand’s henchmen and introduced to the bleached-out new king of the world. Since Teddy’s big blast, Victor had transformed the tower he shared with Howard into a chic retreat, complete with a roof garden, art gallery, yoga classes and, based on the meal served to Will, an olive garden. And the young man could stay, Strand said, if he proved “of value.” (Virginia crib much, Vic?)
Immediately, Will lost his chance by questioning Strand’s self-assurance. But then the newcomer immediately grabbed it again by offering to show His Majesty where he’d been awarded the St. Christopher Medal that Victor had given to Alicia. We learned more about Will as we went along, as if he’d only left the settlement where he’d been hiding out with the senator he’d been an aide to because he’d been kicked out. He’s been trying to make amends ever since.
“Don’t spend a moment trying to make things right,” Strand scoffed, but devil horns sprouting. “Focus on showing them they were wrong.”
When Strand, his men and Will sought shelter from nuclear rain under the bridge the newcomer called home, he accidentally revealed that he knew Alicia… just as they were attacked by what he called Stalkers, who looked like the sand people from Star Wars and apparently went around stripping the dead. Eventually, Strand’s men were killed, Will was shot in the leg, and after seeing a clue that Alicia was at the Franklin Hotel, Victor had left him to look for his old friend.
At a lighthouse – because why not? – Will, damn it, caught up with Victor and explained at gunpoint that he tested Strand to see if he was worth saving. He and the senator’s crew were holed up at the Franklin when Teddy’s scouts killed everyone. Well, everyone except him. (He could have been hiding.) Then he was locked up with Alicia and the rest of the cult members. So why had she kicked him out? He had refused to do anything that would have protected anyone but her. Bringing her Victor, he thought, might make it right. But “I doubt she would even recognize you now,” Will . said
As if to prove the point, Strand attacked Will, who stiffened at the door instead of running toward it. Was he afraid of the walkers in the fog? No, they were the reanimated Franklin gang. For a hot minute, Will and Strand teamed up to get the lights going and even saved each other in the fog. Not with the walkers, Alicia then rushed to the Franklin, where they found a note from her to Will. “Padre” was all it said. Who is that? It might not even be a who, Will explained. And “it may not even exist.” (Stories from the cryptic.)
Gradually, Victor concluded that Will had loved Alicia. Beach had that too. Maybe, but mostly Will, they decided, they should find her together—or let her find them. To that end, they dragged the light back to the roof of the tower, where it immediately began to attract walkers. Will assured Victor that Alicia would not only find them, but that she could help him be the man he was again. Only he was far too happy with this version of himself to want to. Besides, “she doesn’t want anything to do with me after this.”
After what now? Oooh, after Victor pushed Will off the roof. (Damn, I liked Will.) Finally alone, Howard noticed that the beacon would attract more than walkers—it might even grab Morgan’s attention. “I’m not worried about him or anyone else,” chuckled
Lex Luthor Victor. “Anyone who tries to get to me will have to go through it” – in other words, the barricade of walkers that formed around the tower.
What did you think of the season 7 premiere? Bad Victor is extremely good Victor, isn’t it? Was anyone else sorry to see Will sent so quickly? Rate the episode en route to the comments in the poll below.
