Onesumore: Nicolas Cage’s ‘Jiu Jitsu’ Making SVOD Premiere on Netflix in March 2021
One of the films that managed to release in 2020, Jiu Jitsu will be heading to Netflix US in March 2021 for its first SVOD. The sci-fi martial arts film hits Netflix on March 20, 2021.
Based on the 2017 comic book of the same name, the film is directed and written by Dimitri Logothetis who is best known for his work and involvement in combat-based films, including the Kickboxer movies, Sleepwalkers and Dragon wings and The lost Angel.
Jiu Jitsu follows the events of an alien invasion where an ancient order of jiu-jitsu fighters arm themselves to fight them.
Among the actors in the feature film are Frank Grillo, Marie Avgeropoulos, Tony Jaa, Rick Yune, Eddie Steeples, JuJu Chan Szeto, Alain Moussi and the man and legend himself, Nicolas Cage.
The film was able to release in a limited number of theaters last year and was also made available on VOD platforms. The addition of Netflix will mark its debut in SVOD. The Avenue Entertainment is distributing and the film’s original budget was reportedly over $ 25 million.
Only Netflix US is currently expected to see the movie added in March 2021 with other regions unknown. Netflix may add the movie to other regions later – check with your Netflix apps for the latest one.
Sadly, the film didn’t leave much of a mark on those who saw it. In fact, it’s one of the lowest-rated movies of 2020 with an abysmal 2.9 / 10. Some called the movie a real-time war crime watch and others were more accepting of it. This was a martial arts movie filled with memes that shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
Critics weren’t particularly impressed either. The film is currently 27 years old on Metacritic. Polygon’s review was perhaps the nicest thing to say that the action was “exciting.” John Anderson of the WSJ said the movie “will probably tickle hardcore martial arts and samurai fans”.
