If we look back at sports drama made over the years, or rather biographies, we’ve seen multiple classics, but how many if they were sensational stories? Some were extremely emotional and some were inspiring, but when it comes to telling a story that actually explored a pretty revolutionary topic in this sports world, Rashmi Rocket stands big and apart. Watching these kinds of stories in mainstream genre like biographical and sports drama is really for the Indian/Bollywood audience.

This ZEE5 Original tells the inspiring story of a small-town girl, Rashmi (called Rocket because of her Rocket speed) who overcomes all societal barriers to become a national-level athlete, but her glory is stunted when her being asked to undergo a gender test. This individual battle becomes a battle for all female gender athletes who have seen the worst experiences claimed by this scientifically inaccurate test and it also makes a speech about inequality between male and female athletes. The writing is top notch, arguably the most unusual yet remarkable issue ever addressed in this genre. The screenplay can go awry here and there as it falls prey to the dramatic notion of Bollywood filmmaking, but the core of the story is never damaged. From ambitions to favoritism to politics to law and justice, it’s too much for one story and well, I think that’s what makes it special.

Coming to the performances, Rashmir Rocket is pretty good here. Taapsee Pannu as Rashmi takes on the character of the character and effortlessly diverts multiple changes to situations. Priyanshu Painyuli and Abhishek Banerjee both struggle at first but look more confident later on. Supriya Pathak’s experience gives exactly what the director wanted in that role. Rashmi Rocket is a little longer than expected due to the songs and romance, which weren’t really essential parts of the main context, but still figuratively fine as far as the mainstream bollywood movie goes.

Director Akarsh Khurrana finally has a product to remember. His directorial career so far has been decent, but nothing remarkable, so this film may be the best bet for that feat. Other than a few flaws here and there and scattered stories on some occasions, Rashmi Rocket is not damaged anywhere. It flies high and offers you a worthy two-hour ride, so don’t miss it. Highly recommended for female audience.
