Onesumore: ‘Space Force’ Season 2: Filming Begins in May 2021 & What We Know So Far
Space force will officially return for Season 2 on Netflix. In November 2020, Netflix finally gave the official nod to a second season when it was widely known that it had been in active development since July 2020. Now we know filming is set to begin in summer 2021. !
Season 1 released on Netflix on May 28, 2020 and coincided (roughly) with the SpaceX / NASA launch it happened the same weekend.
The series featured a wide range of stars, including Steve Carrell (who worked with Greg Daniels on Office), Ben Schwartz, John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, Diana Silvers and Jimmy O. Yang. Not only did it feature a huge star lineup, it also featured a rocking soundtrack.
While reviews were mixed for the first season, most agreed that it has potential, although the consensus is that Greg Daniel’s Prime Video series, Download, was the better of the two new shows.
Now let’s take a look at the prospects for a second season.
AT Space force been renewed for season 2 at Netflix?
Official renewal status: Officially renewed (Last update: 14/11/2020)
In July 2020, we learned that Netflix had renewed Space force for a second season and was in active development. The news comes from the same source that helped us bring the news that Ozark was renewed before it was officially announced by Netflix the next day, among other series.
It wasn’t until November 2020 that The Hollywood Reporter finally announced on behalf of Netflix this season 2 was a try, but there were compelling reasons to be skeptical about the show’s future beyond season 2. More on that in a second.
Despite early indications that the series was a “dud,” many subscribers tune in to watch the series, with 40 million actually watching the first season within the first 28 days of its release.
However, the public defied critics’ warnings with much more favorable scores. On RottenTomatoes (as of May 31), the audience score is 74% against 39% for the critic. Metacritic scores the series at 47 while IMDb users have the series indexed at 6.9.
Is Season 2 the last chance to get it right for Space Force?
As we mentioned, there is a lot of criticism for the series and rightly so.
Along with the renewal, we have learned several changes that could be the first signs that this is the last chance to do things right for Space force on Netflix.
Specifically, it was said in the THR report that production is moved from Los Angeles to Vancouver to reduce costs. In addition, an upheaval also takes place in the writer’s room.
Norm Hiscock will join the team and act as co-showrunner (likely to free up time for Greg Daniels who is also simultaneously working on From Amazon Download renewed for season 2).
Hiscock is best known for his role as a producer on NBC’s Parks and recreation but has also served as a writer and producer on titles like The Children in the room, king of the hill, and Corner gas.
What to expect Space force season 2
Space force finished on quite the cliffhanger. Mark returned to Space Force HQ after a dramatic escalation to the moon with the United States sabotaging the Chinese base and vice versa. They are all now stuck up there and Mark has returned to the save of the day.
Of course, one of the main questions in Season 1 that never really got answered is why is Maggie in jail. There was a time jump in Episode 1, and other than various clues (including the fact that she is serving 40 years), we still don’t know what crime Maggie committed. She escaped (alongside her prison guard girlfriend) to help Erin.
Beyond that, there is no other major story arc hanging. We know that Season 2 would likely continue to explore the burgeoning relationship between Dr. Chan and Angela.
What about spin-offs? Several times throughout the series, Mark sits around a table with the other leaders of the different forces? Could we maybe have spin-off episodes or entire spin-off series?
It’s not clear so soon who would return, but it is with great sadness that Mark Naird’s dad on the show won’t be returning given the sad passage by Fred Willard shortly before the release of Season 1.
When season 2 of Space force released on Netflix?
The first series actually saw a quick turnaround given its January 2019 announcement. It was filmed between September 2019 and January 2020 before releasing in May 2020.
In February 2021, we learned from ProdductionWeekly issue 1235 that filming for Space force Season 2 is scheduled from May 3, 2021 to June 21, 2021.
As mentioned above, all of the Season 2 filming takes place in Vancouver, Canada.
This could mean that a release date at the end of 2021 could be probable or 2022 failing that.
