Onesumore: ‘The Crown’ Season 5 on Netflix: Filming to Begin in July 2021 & What We Know So Far
At the end of Season 4, Olivia Colman’s time also ends The crown as Queen Elizabeth II. With the changing of the guard (filming) scheduled for 2021, we will keep track of everything related to The crown season 5 on Netflix. Here’s everything we know so far The crown season 5, including the cast, movie dates, and Netflix release date.
From 2016, The crown got better and better with each new season. The polarizing drama has drawn millions of followers over the course of life, and the current reign of Queen Elizabeth II is explored.
The series was created by Peter Morgan and derived from his 2006 film The Queen. Since the first day, The crown has been one of the most expensive TV series that Netflix has to offer. It is estimated that the first season cost around $ 100 million to produce.
What is the Netflix release date for The crown season 5?
It has been confirmed that we will not be seeing the fifth season of The crown on Netflix until 2022. The reason for the delay is that Left Bank Pictures is taking a break between shoots as the cast changes for the last time.
Who are the new cast members of The crown season 5?
Like Claire Foy before her, Olivia Colman’s time as Queen Elizabeth in The crown is finished. Colman and all of the cast members of the third and fourth seasons of The crown will be replaced by a new cast that will represent the aging members of the Royal Family respectively.
Imelda Staunton – Queen Elizabeth II
Olivia Colman’s replacement as Queen Elizabeth II is Imelda Staunton. She will play the oldest version of Queen Elizabeth II we’ve seen in The crown so far. Like Foy and Colman before her, Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth II for two seasons.
Imelda Staunton is famous for her portrayal of villainous Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series.
Jonathan Pryce – Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
Replacing Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh is Jonathan Pryce. Coincidentally, the two actors are widely known to have appeared in HBO. Game of thrones, but Pryce is best known for being Bond villain Elliot Carver in Tomorrow never dies. Most recently, Pryce portrayed his real-life lookalike Pope Francis in the Netflix Original movie. The two popes.
Lesley Manville – Princess Margaret
Replacing Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, the Countess of Snowdon is Lesley Manville. Vanessa Kirby and Helena Bonham Carter both did a great job in their portrayals of Princess Margaret, and we expect Manville to follow in their footsteps. Manville is known for her portrayal of the Flittle Fairy in Disney live-action Maleficent, and Maleficent: mistress of evil, respectively.
Dominic West – Prince Charles
Josh O’Connor’s replacement as Prince Charles is Dominic West. West’s casting was a major surprise, and we’re more than intrigued to see what the actor will look like in his portrayal of Prince Charles. Arguably, any cast of Prince Charles will be closely scrutinized, as the Heir to the Throne certainly has a unique look that few could replicate. West is best known for his role on Thread as Detective James McNulty.
Elizabeth Debicki – Princess Diana
Elizabeth Debicki replaces Emma Corrin as Princess Diana. Although she only played the role of Princess Diana for one season, Emma Corrin gave a very memorable performance. There are only five years between Corrin and Debecki, but no one can say that the latter will certainly give an excellent portrayal of Princess Diana in the last years of her life.
Eagle-eyed Marvel fans will recognize Debicki for her portrayal of Ayesha, the Ruler’s Golden High Priestess in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
We are still waiting to know which actors will play the roles of Princess Anne and Princes Edwards and Andrew respectively. There is also the interest in young actors playing the roles of Princes William and Harry.
We’ll be sure to keep you up to date with all the latest news from the cast.
What historical events will we see in The crown season 5?
The 1990s were arguably one of the most difficult years in Queen Elizabeth’s reign. In particular, the Queen lamented that 1992 was her ‘annus horribilis’ (horrible year), which was rocked by royal scandals and political discord.
In 1992, three of Queen Elizabeth’s four children separated or divorced their partner. The most famous was the separation of princess diana and Prince charles.
Public opinion towards the royal family has been hugely successful over the decade, paving the way for a rise in republicanism among part of the population. Much of the discord between Queen Elizabeth and her subjects was not aimed directly at her, but more at the behaviors of extended family members.
In 1997, one of the most controversial events in British history took place in Paris, when Diana was killed in a car accident. In response, the Queen and Duke shielded Princes William and Harry from the onslaught of the press, which in turn rocked public opinion, while in the public eye the Queen had failed addressed the death of her former daughter-in-law.
Historical events we’re likely to see in Season 5 of The crown:
- Prince Andrew’s divorce
- Princess Anne’s divorce
- Windsor Castle fire
- The separation / divorce of Prince Charles and Lady Diana
- The Queen sues the Sun newspaper
- The death of Princess Diana
- Tony Blair becomes Prime Minister

Is a sixth season of The crown come to Netflix?
When the series was renewed for its fifth season it had been announced that it would be the last of the Crown. In the following months, creator, Peter Morgan decided to overturn the decision, and a sixth and final season of The crown will arrive on Netflix in 2023.
Morgan said the following about the decision to renew the series for a sixth season:
As we began to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, we needed to go back to the original plan and do six seasons. To be clear, Series 6 won’t bring us any closer to the current one – it will just allow us to cover the same time period in more detail.
Fans were delighted to hear the news when Netflix broke the news on Twitter.
